What is FUE Hair Transplant?

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is the most advanced hair restoration technique available today. Individual hair follicles are extracted one at a time from the donor area — usually the back and sides of the scalp — and precisely implanted into thinning or balding areas. There is no linear scar and minimal downtime, which is why FUE has become the preferred method over older strip-harvesting techniques.

Shanghai's leading clinics perform FUE at exceptional volume, giving their surgical teams a level of precision and speed that's difficult to match elsewhere. Vday coordinates your entire trip — consultation, procedure, accommodation, and aftercare — so you can focus on recovery, not logistics.

The Procedure Process

Your surgeon will assess your donor density, hair loss pattern, and goals during consultation, then map out a hairline and graft plan tailored to your face. The procedure itself is performed under local anaesthesia and typically takes 6–10 hours depending on graft count, with a short break partway through.

Initial shedding of the transplanted hairs occurs at 2–6 weeks — this is completely normal and expected. New growth begins around 3 months, with significant density visible by 6 months and full results settling in at 9–12 months.

FUE Hair Transplant FAQ

Yes. FUE is considered a permanent solution because the transplanted follicles are taken from areas resistant to hair loss (typically the back of the scalp). However, your existing non-transplanted hair may continue to thin over time, which is why some clients choose a second session years later to maintain density.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so you feel no pain during the session itself. Mild soreness, tightness, or scabbing in the donor and recipient areas is normal for the first few days and is well managed with medication.

FUE removes individual follicles one by one, leaving no linear scar and a faster recovery. FUT removes a strip of scalp, leaving a single linear scar that can show if you wear your hair very short. FUE is now the preferred method for most patients and is what Vday-coordinated clinics perform.

Initial shedding occurs at 2–6 weeks — this is normal and not a sign of failure. New growth begins around month 3. Significant density is visible by 6 months, with full, final results at 9–12 months.

It depends on your hair loss severity, density goals, and donor supply. Mild recession may need 1,500–2,000 grafts, while more advanced cases can require 3,000–5,000 or more. A proper in-person or video assessment gives you an accurate estimate before you travel.

Shanghai clinics perform FUE at very high volume, so surgeons develop exceptional speed and precision. Costs are significantly lower than Singapore or the UK, without compromising on quality — and Vday handles every detail of your trip.
