Stage 1: Consultation and Smile Design

Visit 1 — Day 1

Your first appointment is entirely about understanding what you want and designing a smile that suits your face. The dentist will take clinical photographs of your teeth, profile shots, and a full-face smile photo. These are used in digital smile design software to map your current smile and model the proposed result.

During this appointment you'll discuss:

At Vday-coordinated clinics, clients receive their digital smile preview before the end of the first appointment and can request adjustments. You should feel confident about the planned result before proceeding to preparation.

Stage 2: Tooth Preparation

Visit 1 — Same Day or Day 2

Once the smile design is approved, tooth preparation begins. The dentist administers local anaesthesia — you will feel pressure but no pain during the preparation itself.

Preparation involves removing a thin, uniform layer of enamel from the front surface of each tooth being veneered. The amount removed is precise: typically 0.3–0.5mm, which is roughly the thickness of a contact lens. This creates the space for the veneer to sit flush with the surrounding teeth rather than appearing bulky.

This step is irreversible — once enamel is removed, the tooth requires a veneer (or crown) permanently. This is an important decision to have made consciously before the procedure begins, not mid-appointment. Good clinics and Vday's preparation process ensure you're fully informed before any enamel is touched.

After preparation, digital impressions or a physical mould of your prepared teeth are taken and sent to the laboratory. These become the template from which your permanent porcelain veneers are crafted.

Stage 3: Temporary Veneers

Visit 1 — End of Day

Before you leave the clinic after preparation, temporary veneers are placed over your prepared teeth. These are made from acrylic resin — they protect the prepared enamel, maintain aesthetics, and give you a working preview of your new smile while the permanent veneers are being made.

Temporaries are attached with a weaker bonding agent so they can be removed easily at your second appointment. Be aware:

Most clients find they adapt to temporaries quickly and find them comfortable within a day or two.

Vday coordinates your entire veneer trip — clinic scheduling, smile design review, accommodation recommendations, and post-procedure follow-up back home.

Stage 4: Lab Crafting — The 5–7 Day Wait

Days 2–7

While you spend time in Shanghai between appointments, the dental laboratory is crafting your permanent veneers from the impressions taken. Shanghai's leading clinic-affiliated labs use IPS e.max lithium disilicate — the international benchmark for porcelain veneers, offering exceptional strength combined with the translucency that mimics natural enamel.

The ceramist works from the digital specifications and shade records, hand-characterising each veneer to replicate the subtle colour variations and surface texture of natural teeth. High-volume labs in Shanghai have ceramists who work exclusively on veneers — their speed and consistency comes from specialisation, not compromise.

The 5–7 day window between appointments is something Vday uses thoughtfully. Clients typically explore Shanghai, rest, and return for their final appointment feeling relaxed rather than rushed.

Stage 5: Bonding Your Permanent Veneers

Visit 2 — Day 7–8

Your second appointment begins with removing the temporary veneers and cleaning the prepared tooth surfaces. The permanent veneers are tried in without bonding first — placed against the teeth so you and the dentist can assess fit, colour, and shape in different lighting conditions (including natural light).

Once the try-in is approved, bonding proceeds:

  1. The tooth surface is etched with a mild acid to create microscopic texture for the bond
  2. A bonding primer is applied to both the tooth and the inner surface of the veneer
  3. Dental cement is applied and the veneer is seated precisely
  4. A curing light hardens the cement within seconds
  5. Excess cement is removed and the margins are polished

This is repeated for each veneer in sequence. Once complete, your bite is checked carefully — the dentist will ask you to bite on articulating paper to identify any high points and make fine adjustments. Getting the bite right is critical: even a fraction of a millimetre of excessive height can cause discomfort and uneven force distribution.

You leave this appointment with your completed smile. Results are immediate and dramatic — the transformation is visible from the moment the temporaries come off and the permanents go on.

Aftercare in the First Few Weeks

The first 48–72 hours post-bonding are a setting period. During this time:

Longer term, the most important aftercare step — if you grind at night — is to have a custom night guard made by your local dentist within a few weeks of returning home. Grinding is the primary cause of veneer damage, and a well-fitted guard protects your investment for years. Read our full guide on making veneers last longer →

What to Do If Something Doesn't Feel Right

Vday stays in contact after you return home. If your bite feels uneven after a week, if sensitivity doesn't resolve within two weeks, or if a veneer chips — contact us directly. We coordinate communication with your Shanghai clinic and can arrange remote assessment or, if needed, a return visit.

Minor bite adjustments are common and simple — a dentist near you can usually make the adjustment with a brief appointment. Major issues are rare when the procedure is done correctly, but our concierge team handles follow-up so you're never navigating it alone.
